About

"You don't make a photograph just with a camera. You bring to the act of photography all the pictures you have seen, the books you have read, the music you have heard, the people you have loved." -Ansel Adams

Brief Artist Statement

Photography and filmmaking, for me, is about bearing witness to others' lives and my own. They're a pledge to notice and acknowledge the intricacies of life and existence. It's a commitment to be present for the quiet moments and the grand, the joyous and the challenging, the extraordinary and the mundane. When I’m capturing moments with a camera, I’m saying what Susan Sarandon's character in 'Shall We Dance?' said about marriage: “Your life will not go unnoticed because I will notice it. Your life will not go unwitnessed because I will be your witness.” These words resonate deeply within me.

Testimonials

"I’ve worked with JR on set several times and every time I've worked with them, they've always been a delight. They're kind, professional, easy-going, and have a sense of humor while still taking their job very seriously. When there is a creative need, they're able to take their experience and technical skills and apply them efficiently to benefit the vision & the crew of the project. JR made my work as an actress and model on set so much easier and less stressful!"

"JR's photography sees the synergy of a moment and shows it to us. Their shots of my music recording sessions for our album captured veteran artists making music history and made us certainly feel that way. Several of my band players commented “Are they available to create me a new headshot too?” We were so inspired by what JR showed us of ourselves and wanted to see more of it!"

"Trytone Sound hired JR to shoot our recording studio to use for our social media and website. Their direction, photography, and ideas allowed the experience to be engaging and generated some amazing images."

Bringing it to the Table… Interested & Interesting.

Given the nickname "eagle eye" by friends in childhood, it was apparent early on that JR had a knack for seeing visual subtleties that not everyone else could see and being aware of moments of which not everyone else was privy. It is the art and science of transferring those subtleties, and those moments, to a tangible photograph that is a constant work of love and wonder.

Their extensive career in photography and cinematography shapes not only the way they look at the world, but the way they relate to it. JR’s camera has been their passport to places, people, and events to which they would not have had access otherwise. It has allowed them to work and connect with everyone from international politicians and celebrities to the underprivileged. It has helped to reinforce and cultivate their values of empathy, critical thinking, investigation, and curiosity.

They studied cinematography and art history at Boston University, earning Honors & Summa Cum Laude recognition (B.S. in Film/Television at the College of Communications). This time would be the foundation that would allow them to learn, and refine over the years, how to tell a visual story using equal parts sound technical specifications, intellectual theories, and gut instincts.

They’re also a teacher and practitioner of the martial arts, lending a deep, cultivated sense of focus, integrity, and attention to detail to all their pursuits.

By combining artistic vision with technical tendencies and physical fitness, JR creates a unique style and successful outcomes for clients.

They’re interested in traveling and shooting on-location. They’re ultimate destination is to go into space [seriously], but barring that, they carry a current driver's license, U.S. passport, and an unquenchable thirst for life!

Together we will build a roadmap for your shoot. I look forward to connecting with you and discussing your vision! - Cheers, JR
