Women's fencing class; December 11, 1923.

In a world where women were expected to conform to societal norms and expectations, these women chose to pursue a sport that was typically associated with men.
Although women's foil was first allowed in the 1924 Summer Olympics, it would take until 1996 & 2000 for the Epee & Sabre sections respectively to allow a women's division. The Epee & Sabre are considered more advanced and dangerous, and therefore, inappropriate for women. Read more about the history of fencing on Wikipedia.
